Description

Award-winning filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s film _The Wild Pear Tree_ tackles growing up, broken dreams, and the responsibilities shared between family, through the eyes of a graduate student returning to his childhood home. Sinan (Aydin Dogu Demirkol) has long held dreams of becoming a writer, and while he may be returning to his hometown with a degree, the reality of achieving his aspirations is slowly becoming a distant one. Although Sinan had planned on coming home to save up the money to publish his first novel, he soon finds himself caught up in the mire of his father’s gambling debts and the insidious drama of his hometown. As father and son grapple with their own lost dreams, and their responsibilities to each other, Sinan becomes a product of his own cascading cynicism. Ceylan delivers yet another leisurely and unconventional character study that feeds on futility with singular compassion and humor.

Press

"Cemcir's performance, suffused with a kind of wily, defiant grace, has an emotional depth that makes this movie's spirit not just heavy and somber, but also curiously forgiving." - Los Angeles Times
