Description

Executive Producer Scott Z. Burns Attending 4/20.

In this documentary from Richard Ladkani, a team of scientists, journalists, and technicians work to save the life of the endangered Vaquita whale, who is being hunted by drug cartels, poachers and traffickers. Following the team in Mexico's Sea of Cortez, the film brings to light the troubling dangers whales and other ocean life face due to human interference, cruelty and ongoing tensions. The fish at the center of the region's unrest is the Totoaba, whose prized bladder is known as the "cocaine of the sea" and has become a top target for the Chinese fishing market. Meanwhile, a Mexican drug lord is at the head of the fishing enterprise of the region, and during their hunts for the Totoaba they have managed to drive another species to near extinction; the Vaquita, a whale subspecies that is believed to have little more than a decade to extinction.
