What started in a run-down hotel as a hospice for children afflicted with AIDS in the late 80s is now Haiti’s only pediatric hospital providing affordable care to the country’s most vulnerable population. With the support of a generous donor, Saint Damien Pediatric Hospital was able to build a facility properly equipped to care for Haiti’s children. Meet Fr. Rick Frechette and Dr. Jacqueline Gautier, the two directors of the hospital, who have worked tirelessly to establish Saint Damien as an anchor for the community, providing not only health care, but farming, food, and educational resources. The Land of High Mountains shows us that in the face of extreme poverty and limited social and political infrastructure, Haitians and foreigners are working together to help this nation of vibrant, determined people attain health and happiness. -MR
