In the 16th century, Martin Guerre (Gérard Depardieu) returns home to his village after seven years away at war, demonstrating far more wisdom than both the locals and wife (Nathalie Baye) remember him as having. Has he changed, or is he an impostor? A real-life story in French history, it had been turned into a book, play and opera before director Daniel Vigne enlisted the great Jean-Claude Carrière to write this adaptation. The film went on to spawn Somersby and a West End musical, and won Best Foreign Film from the National Board of Review and Depardieu Best Actor from the National Society of Film Critics.
