Description

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 14 DOUBLE FEATURE

PSYCHO 7:00
Alfred Hitchock's landmark masterpiece of the macabre stars a bloodcurdling Anthony Perkins as the troubled Norman Bates, whose old dark house and adjoining motel are not the place to spend a quiet evening. Upon its initial release, film critics did not know what to make of this game-changer. Now, revisit (or see for the ?rst time) the ?lm that broke all the rules of horror ?lms and set new ones for the next generation. Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, Martin Balsam, and Bernard Herrmann’s dissonant score co-star. (1960, 109 min, 35mm)

+ REMEMBER MY NAME 5:00, 9:00
Alan Rudolph's 1978 film about an ex-con (Geraldine Chaplin) planning revenge on her ex-husband (Anthony Perkins) is an eccentric, stubborn, and gripping piece, in which Rudolph executes an elegant Hitchcockian transfer of audience identification from victim to aggressor. The well-worked sound track (which includes Alberta Hunter's now famous blues score) suggests the influence of producer Robert Altman, but Rudolph has a sense of plot and characterization that is dark, tortured, and very much his own. The film isn't devoid of humor, but its overriding tones are of passion and pain: Chaplin gives a performance that's so wired and immediate it almost hurts. With Berry Berenson; photography by Tak Fujimoto. –Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader (1978, 94 min, 35mm) Rare screening! Never released on VHS, DVD or Blu-ray!
