Initially on their way home to face a host of criminal charges, the former Enterprise crew must travel back in time to the 1980s to bring a pair of humpback whales to the 23rd century in the hopes they'll be able to communicate with a probe threatening Earth with certain destruction. Unlike previous Star Trek films, this installment in the series was shot extensively on location in San Francisco wherein Kirk & company partake in a humorous and anachronistic adventure. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) employs a time machine to travel from 1893 London to 1979 San Francisco in pursuit of his friend, John Leslie Stevenson (David Warner), a surgeon suspected of being the notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper.
