Inspired by the headline-dominating 1974 kidnapping of heiress Patricia Hearst, granddaughter of the American publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, this atmospheric drama is a fictionalized re-imagining of her time in hiding, from the perspective of Jenny Shimada (Chau), a political activist on the run from the United States government for past acts of violence. While living off-the-grid, a publisher comes to her with a deal, which Jenny agrees to in the hopes that it would finance an escape from the country. Jenny is assigned to write about and take care of Pauline (Gadon), the captured granddaughter of a wealthy newspaper mogul, and two other fugitives. With the story experienced through the perspective of an Asian-American, American Woman offers unique and refreshing insight into the ideologies of radical groups in the 1970s. American Woman is director Semi Chellas’ debut feature-length film.
