Description

The wonderfully anarchic spirit of the Czech New Wave is alive and well and living ... in America? Give Me Liberty follows Vic, a young Russian-American who over the course of a hilarious, poignant and very wild day and night in Milwaukee, ferries disabled passengers to and from their appointments while he tries to deliver a boisterous gaggle of elderly mourners to a funeral. Kirill Mikhanovsky’s startling film adopts the breakneck pace of the medical transport Vic navigates through innumerable obstacles and his début has the anecdotal freshness of a recent arrival looking in (think Milos Forman’s Taking Off). Marxist (of the Groucho variety) to the core, here’s a timely reminder that, for many, the American Dream remains as elusive as it is alluring. The film and its rambunctious ensemble stay with you long after the lights go on.
