Description

A lonely 12-year old boy, Oskar, befriends a mysterious 12-year-old girl, Eli, after she moves in next door. Pale and serious, Eli’s arrival coincides with a series of inexplicable disappearances and murders. As their innocent friendship blossoms, Oskar learns that Eli is the vampire responsible for them and their loyalties to one another are put to the test as Oskar faces his darkest hour while Eli must consider relocating in order to continue living. Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson weaves friendship, rejection, and loyalty into a film that is at once disturbing and dark yet poetic and tender. This tableau of adolescence from Sweden won numerous awards and topped several best of lists in 2008. Two years later, it was remade in American as Let Me In but the original is still the gold standard for using vampiric folklore and horror to tell an honest coming-of-age story about relationships.

Let's make it a vampire weekend: slip into your scariest and most gruesome bloodsucking costume and terrify the audience in a costume contest hosted just before the feature film at 11:00 pm. Let's see your capes, fangs, bat wings, and pale skins! The prize for this contest is sponsored by the Business Improvement District of Coral Gables. Please note: for security reasons, masks are only allowed to be worn during the contest and must be checked by staff prior to entrance.

This screening is a staff pick, selected by Michelle A. Humphreys, Project Services Associate.
