It was supposed to be just another ‘big storm.’ As parents throughout Puerto Rico hurried their kids indoors the evening of September 19, 2017, no one could have imagined the extent to which their lives were about to be altered. By early next morning, Hurricane Maria had made landfall, her violent Category 5 winds thrashing the island nation with unprecedented fury over the next 12 to 18 hours and leaving behind a level of mass devastation beyond description or belief. Yet as the world turned its attention to immediate relief efforts, for Puerto Rico’s children, waking up to an unfamiliar and otherworldly landscape became the start of a wholly new way of living. For precocious budding astronomer Jose David, no electricity meant no light pollution, and more time spent outdoors, stargazing and reconnecting to the world around him. For Valeria, a mud-filled swimming pool became a vegetable garden for her family—and a keen lesson in self-sufficiency. And for Andres, impromptu sidewalk concerts with friends and strangers alike became a foundation for a neighborhood rebuilding itself. All are part of a generation rediscovering the value of community, of what’s truly important and of the need to create their own sense of hope in this fresh, lively–and increasingly timely–new documentary from director Alfred Castellanos and producer Laura Duque.
Sinopsis
Debía ser simplemente otra tormenta grande. Cuando los padres en todo Puerto Rico apresuraron a sus hijos al interior de sus casas en la noche del 19 de septiembre de 2017, nadie podía haber imaginado la magnitud del impacto de la tormenta en sus vidas. Temprano a la mañana siguiente, el huracán María tocó tierra y sus violentos vientos de Categoría 5 golpearon este país isleño con furia sin precedentes a lo largo de las siguientes 12 a 18 horas, dejando tras de sí un nivel masivo de devastación que es difícil de describir y de creer. Pero a medida que el mundo volvió su atención a los esfuerzos inmediatos de alivio, para los niños de Puerto Rico, despertar a un paisaje desconocido y como de otro mundo, se convirtió en el comienzo de una forma de vivir que era completamente nueva. Para José David, precoz astrónomo en ciernes, no tener electricidad significó la ausencia de contaminación visual, así como más tiempo para pasar dentro de su casa mirando las estrellas y reconectando con el mundo alrededor suyo. Para Valeria, una piscina llena de lodo se convirtió en el jardín de verduras de su familia, y de paso en una apropiada lección de autosuficiencia. Y para Andrés, espontáneos conciertos callejeros con amigos y extraños se convirtió en la base para un barrio que se reconstruía a sí mismo. Todos ellos son parte de una generación que está redescubriendo el valor de la comunidad, de lo que es realmente importante y de la necesidad de crear su propio sentido de esperanza en este refrescante y cada vez más relevante nuevo documental del director Alfred Castellanos y de la productora Laura Duque.

Created at the CLUES Visiones Filmmaking Workshop, an intensive summer workshop that enabled participants, ages 16-19, to discover new talents and a passion for storytelling while learning skills in scriptwriting, sound recording, cinematography, lighting, and editing. The films explored topics such as identity, belonging and the immigrant experience.
