In late 2014, with gentrification displacing increasing numbers of longtime residents, the shooting death of Michael Brown bringing the issue of police brutality into the national dialogue and out into the streets—and in the midst of the most contentious presidential campaign in history–Oakland-based community organizers Anayvette Martinez and Marilyn Hollinquest set out to create a lasting, and necessary, change within their community. In a world in which Latinas have historically low high school graduation rates and African-American girls are viewed as adults and robbed of their childhoods, the pair formed the Radical Monarchs, an alternative to Girl Scouts where young girls of color learn self-worth in a world often hostile to their wants, needs and dignity. Balancing intense logistical demands, a perpetual hunt for funding and their own roles and mothers, activists and friends, Martinez and Hollinquest together create an essential organization, fending off right wing media attacks and bringing in guests such as Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza and former Black Panther Cheryl Dawson, all in the name of radical self-love in this heartwarming look at the first three years in the life of an indispensable collective, from director Linda Goldstein Knowlton (executive producer of Dream, Girl and Whale Rider).

Created at the CLUES Visiones Filmmaking Workshop, an intensive summer workshop that enabled participants, ages 16-19, to discover new talents and a passion for storytelling while learning skills in scriptwriting, sound recording, cinematography, lighting, and editing. The films explored topics such as identity, belonging and the immigrant experience.
