Rising star Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) is ideally cast as King Henry the Fifth, a boy who becomes king at a perilous and decisive moment in history, and whose pacifism slowly but implacably turns into steely tyranny when he's forced to go to war. This stirring adaptation (by director David Michôd and writer Joel Edgerton) of the Henriad plays eschews Shakespeare's language for modern speech, but retains Henry IV and Henry V's epic engagement of the personal and the political, and depicts as strongly as Shakespeare the locomotive, unstoppable power of history. The uniformly strong cast includes Edgerton as Falstaff, Ben Mendelsohn as Henry IV, and, in a delightfully prickly turn, Robert Pattinson as the Dauphin. (2019, 140 min, DCP ‘Scope)
