"Svankmajer's sinister visual music has an irresistible potency and allure. Watching it, we feel the enthrallment of the irrational. It takes us back to a time in the history of the movies when the audiences responded to the images on screen with a combination of awe and fear, when in submitting to them, we felt as it we were submitting to a spell." - Washington Post

"In Svankmajer's hands, Carroll's Alice in Wonderland itself becomes ucanny once again, the familiar made unfamiliar." - Kinoeye

"Svankmajer mines the concealed, with an anger and a sense of sabotage, to unlock surreal and ambiguous mythical vistas." - Senses of Cinema

A memorably bizarre screen version of Lewis Carroll’s novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” mixing one live actor with a large variety of stop-motion animated creaturs from the complex (the White Rabbit) to the incredible simple (the Caterpillar). The original story is follow reasonably faithfully, though those familiar with this director’s other films won’t be the least bit surprised by the numerous digressions into Svankmajer territory, living slabs of meat and all. As the opening narration says, it’s a film made for children… perhaps?
