Ways of Being Home explores the immigrant experience from the perspective of the Mexican community living in Northfield, a college town in southern Minnesota. Most members of this immigrant community, about 70% or more, trace their roots back to Maltrata, a small agricultural municipality nestled in the mountains of the state of Veracruz.
Filmed between 2016 and 2019, Ways of Being Home moves between both towns to draw attention to the geographical and emotional displacement experienced by the immigrant community as well as their resilience, ingenuity, and fierce determination. Made in close and constant collaboration with community members, Ways of Being Home offers a nuanced portrayal of the ways displaced people craft a life and a home away from home.
