It’s the summer of 1976, and Gus’s farm family is feeling the effects--physically and financially--of a summers-long drought. When his mother’s divorced friend Cecile arrives, it piques the boy’s curiosity and strains the family to its breaking point in this gorgeous coming-of-age film.
Smart, frustrated, teenager Gus is not ignorant of how the drought is affecting his family in myriad ways. His father is a brute, unafraid to use violence to get what he wants in and out of the home, where his mother lives a fairly staid life. Enter Cecile, his mother’s friend, well-traveled, feminist, attractive and unwilling to take crap from anyone. Soon, the young man is witness to strong feelings run amok amongst the three adults, leading to near-disaster. “[B]rings the fairly recent past to simmering life.” --The Hollywood Reporter
