In this beautiful coming-of-age story, Shaniss and Mikuan, two young women, both from Quebec’s Innu community, are inseparable. That is, until Mikuan falls in love, not only with writing but with a white man, and nothing will ever be the same.

Living in the small port town of Sept-Îles, Quebec, Shaniss and Mikuan seem to be happy. Mikuan is blessed with a loving family with a hunter- and fisher-father, a hardworking mother, and a hockey-star brother. Shaniss on the other hand comes from a broken home, and though life is often difficult, their close friendship helps them endure. But Mikuan is a talented writer, and when she meets Francis, she begins to see the world as a larger place than just the reserve. Based on the acclaimed novel by Naomi Fontaine, Kuessipan is “is a beautiful, un-sensationalized look at young womanhood, friendship and community.” --NOW Toronto
