This lush animated feature debut from Gitanjali Rao is a fascinating mixture of stark realism, satire of Bollywood films, and fantastic elements of Indian mythology.
Fans of the old school animation found in the best of Disney classics should not miss Bombay Rose, a hand-painted animated film that has won acclaim at festivals around the world. Kamala is a young Hindu woman who is facing an arranged marriage, so she escapes to Mumbai where she finds work as a flower seller and a nightclub dancer. She falls deeply in love with Salim, a young Muslim man. Following multiple characters through the crowded streets of Mumbai, the film is an affectionate send-up of Bollywood films that also owes a debt to Charles Dickens, never shying away from the dark side of life in the largest of Indian cities. This sprawling epic was written, designed and directed by Gitanjali Rose.
