In Morocco, a pregnant woman is found sleeping on the streets by a lonely widow in this generous and empathetic debut feature.
Samia is exhausted, tired from being very, very pregnant and out of work, ostracized for not being married and forced to find work on a day-to-day basis. Enter the widow Abla, also fatigued but by grief over the loss of her husband. Reluctantly bringing Samia home, Abla gives the young mother-to-be a refuge with herself and her daughter. Squaring off in their mutual stubbornness, the two women soon find themselves good friends. The prize-winning Adam launched in the “Un Certain Regard” section of Cannes and is “an unabashed love letter to motherhood as well as to the skills of her two leads.” --Variety
