About Cachada: The Opportunity

On the busy streets of one of El Salvador’s most impoverished neighborhoods, single mothers Magaly, Wendy, Chileno, and sisters Magda and Ruth make their livelihoods as vendedores ambulantes, street vendors selling everything from elotes to detergent to toilet paper in order to keep the bills paid and their kids fed. Yet in the spartan utility rooms of a nondescript nearby building, they become the playwrights and performers of La Cachada Teatro, ‘The Opportunity’ Theater. As a form of performance-based therapy and with the help of selfless artistic director Egly Larreynaga, the five women are charged with creating a play rooted in the intense challenges of being sole breadwinners while navigating the burden of extreme poverty. Sharing their most intimate secrets, deepest insecurities and harrowing tales of violent upbringings with a blunt, matter-of-fact frankness, the troupe lose themselves in intense improvisations, coming face to face with deeply embedded traumas and their own roles in ongoing cycles of violence. But with a growing confidence, insight and hard-won self-awareness, the women of La Cachada push forward, building to an emotionally overwhelming and deeply cathartic performance before a packed house in this raw and unforgettable debut feature from writer/director Marlén Viñayo, Audience Award winner at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival.
