Defiant Souls, the new film by prominent Cuban film director Fernando Pérez in collaboration with Swiss filmmaker Laura Cazador, is based on real events and tells the story of Enriqueta Faber (played by Swiss actress Sylvie Testud), a Swiss woman who arrived in Baracoa in 1810 and became the first to practice medicine in Cuba dressed as a man. A career forbidden for women at that time, Enriqueta adopted a male identity to study and practice medicine, and even married a young Cuban peasant Juana de León, which led to a scandalous trial three years later, when she was discovered. A harrowing story of a woman ahead of her time and a pioneer of women’s rights in the nineteenth century.
Insumisas, la nueva película del destacado director de cine cubano Fernando Pérez en colaboración con la cineasta suiza Laura Cazador, está basada en hechos reales y cuenta la historia de Enriqueta Faber (interpretada por la actriz suiza Sylvie Testud), una mujer suiza que Llegó a Baracoa, en 1810 y se convirtió en la primera mujer en ejercer la medicina en Cuba vestido de hombre. Una carrera prohibida para las mujeres en ese momento, Enriqueta adoptó una identidad masculina para estudiar y ejercer la medicina, e incluso se casó con una joven campesina cubana Juana de León, lo que la llevó a un escandaloso juicio tres años después, cuando fue descubierta. Directors Biographies
Fernando Pérez graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in Language and Spanish Literature, and began working in the Cuban film industry in 1971 as an assistant director, before directing his first documentary in 1975. His feature debut was the drama Clandestinos (1987), but it wasn’t until Madagascar (1994) that he garnered significant international recognition. Pérez later directed La Vida es Silbar (1998) and Suite Habana (2003). Suite Habana is considered by many critics to be the best Cuban film in decades. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards in different festivals both in Cuba and abroad, being awarded the National Film Prize in 2007. Pérez’s most recent films include La Pared de las Palabras (2014), Últimos días en La Habana (2016), and Insumisas (2018).
Laura Cazador was born in Ginebra. She studied screenwriter, directing and acting in Switzerland and Cuba. She is also a journalist writer, and finished a degree in Universal History. Her past work has included a documentary about la Tricontinental and a feature length film dealing with the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
