About Identifying Features

Magdalena’s son, Jesús, left Guanajuato with a friend to cross the border into the United States, and then vanished. A last phone call revealed that Jesús was about to board a bus into America, and then… silence for months. And then local police arrive, with evidence taken from photographs, but no body. When another grieving mother tells Magdalena that photos are not proof, and all they have is a bag found among dead bodies, Jesús’s mother embarks on a journey to find hard evidence. Thus, she begins a trek through Mexico, into the worst areas plagued by violence and despair, following instinct and clues and being warned in town after town to let the matter drop. At once devastating and visually breathtaking, this debut feature by writer/director Fernanda Valadez was a Sundance favorite, and will not soon be forgotten.
