Naples. In the deceptive stillness of the great Bourbon-era National Archaeological Museum, a frenetic buzz of activity breathes new life into statues, frescoes, mosaics and exhibits of various eras. The film lovingly depicts the daily lives of the staff, who devote themselves to the countless minute tasks that invigorate ancient works—all requiring inordinate skill and dedication. Agalma (from the Greek for “statue” or “image”) captures the timeless beauty of the museum, as evidenced not only by its breathtaking display of antiquities, but also by the intimate and intangible web of relationships that unfold within it. This magical film reveals the secret, continually renewed kinship between the contemporary visitor and the wonders of Greco-Roman antiquity, as well as the passionate care of those who quietly animate the motionless remnants from an ancient past. The film was produced by Antonella Di Nocera and Lorenzo Cioffi. Di Nocera was Director of Cultural Affairs for the City Council of Naples from 2011 to 2013.
DIRECTOR
Doriana Monaco (Benevento, 1989) studied Archaeology and Art History at the University of Naples Federico II. In 2014 she worked on the Edoardo De Angelis film Perez (IFF, 2016) as assistant director. She directed her first two short films in 2015: Anatomia di un pensiero triste and Laziest Girl in Town. In 2016 she joined the FILMaP - Atelier del cinema del reale in Ponticelli, led by Leonardo Di Costanzo. During that time she wrote and directed the documentary Cronopios, which was selected for the Corso Salani Award at the 2017 Trieste Film Festival.
