Under the blazing sun of Southern Italy, the farmhand Angela works the fields where she is exploited with impunity. Her sudden and unexplained death—perhaps the result of exceedingly harsh working conditions—forces her husband Giuseppe, a former stonecutter laid off after a work-related injury, and their young son Antò, to leave their home in search of work. They find themselves in a tent city of untethered workers—many of them immigrants—reminiscent of a labor camp. The titular “promise” is the pledge that Giuseppe makes to Antò that he, someday, will have his mother back. A modern-day paragon of (neo)realism, Una Promessa denounces societal and human failures by laying them bare before the audience, inescapable to all but the child in this story: a beacon of innocence and hope in an otherwise desperate and unredeemed world that Italy too often chooses to hide. The film premiered at the 2020 Venice International Film Festival, Giornate degli Autori. IFF is honored to host its U.S. premiere.
