"The human element triumphs in almost every foot of They Were Expendable."—Jack Moffitt, Esquire

In the months after the attack on Pearl Harbor that destroyed the United States' Pacific fleet, the Japanese Navy quickly gained control of most of the Pacific Ocean. A handful of brave men and women then faced the might of the entire Japanese military and determined to meet that awesome challenge with the full knowledge that They Were Expendable. Academy Award winner John Wayne and Robert Montgomery star as two sailors assigned to an American PT Boat (Patrol and Torpedo), a small wooden ship that relied on speed, stealth and firepower, whose mission is to attack much larger and better-armed destroyers and battleships in an effort to slow the Japanese conquest and give the United States time to rebuild its fleet. Academy Award winner Donna Reed co-stars as Army Nurse Lt. Sandy Davyss, who nurses the fallen back to health (and falls for Wayne), giving voice and presence to the many women stationed overseas who helped turn the tide in favor of the Allied forces. Directed by Academy Award winner John Ford, the film features some of the most stunning combat scenes ever filmed and received Oscar nominations for both special effects and sound.
