ABOUT SIRENS

On the outskirts of Beirut, Lilas and Shery, co-founders and guitarists of the Middle East’s first all-female metal band, wrestle with friendship, sexuality, and destruction in their pursuit of becoming thrash metal rock stars. In this brisk, real-life rock opera, director Baghdadi reveals the tender heart behind the black leather exterior through the complicated love between the two charismatic front women. Both rivals and muses, Lilas and Shery focus their riffs on the frustrations and joy of growing up in a society with harsh judgement for their music, gender expression, and politics. Set against this backdrop of a country in ongoing political and societal flux, the roar from these sirens rises with an entire generation finding the power in their voice.
