1920, Vienna. This boldly expressionist drama set in the aftermath of The Great War finds former police inspector Peter Perg called upon to solve the sadistic murders of his fellow comrades-in-arms. For the decommissioned Lieutenant Perg, the crimes seem like just one more cruel joke in a world he can barely comprehend. He left home to fight for the Austro-Hungarian empire and now, after two years as a prisoner-of-war, he returns to an insignificant new country and a social order that seems upside down. Bitter, but driven by duty and his personal connection to the murdered men, he joins forces with an unflappable female coroner (Babylon Berlin’s Liv Lisa Fries) to bring the killer to justice. But his former boss, an odious opportunist, seems ready to thwart him at every turn and the murderer soon has Perg in his sights. Directed by Oscar-winner Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters). Winner, Audience Award, Locarno.
