The Martins are a Brazilian family struggling to make ends meet in right-wing president Bolsonaro’s cruel new world. Gabriel Martins’ lovely family drama examines the vicissitudes of Black life in lower-middle-class Brazil.
When Tércia Martin, the mother, survives a terrorist attack (that turns out to be anything but), she begins to wonder if she’s cursed. Her dreams for her family never seem to go in the direction she desires. Her husband, Wellington, is a recovering alcoholic who can only imagine their son, Deivinho, succeeding as a football star. But the kid wants nothing more than to be an astronaut, the first on a Mars colony. At least their daughter, Eunice, a law student, is going to fulfill their dreams, right? But, she’s already in a relationship with another woman, a secret she’s keeping from her family. “Insightful, kind and exceptionally well-acted…” –Shayna Maci Warner, Paste
