Maria, 17-years-old, is the daughter of Samuel and Laura Chapdelaines, rural homesteaders in 1900s northern Quebec, who fight the rugged terrain as they try to make a living and build a life for their family. When three suitors come forward to win her hand, Maria’s decision on whom to marry will have profound consequences for her poor, hardscrabble family: Lorenzo, a city man who works in a factory; Eutrope, a shy neighbor who has known her since childhood; and the most handsome, François, a logger.
