In 1975, during the cultural revolution in China, a nameless hero escapes a labor camp, eager to see a movie. There, on the silver screen, is a brief glimpse of his daughter, whom he hasn’t seen in years. Zhang Yimou’s lush new masterpiece is a love letter to human endurance and the power of cinema.
As our nameless hero trudges across a desert towards a small village, he sees a traveling picture show run by Mr. Movie, a projectionist. Teaming up with an orphan girl named Liu, the hero, along with Mr. Movie and Mr. Movie’s son, this ragtag band of cineastes will all work wonders in pursuit of a very special movie. Censored by the Chinese government, One Second still preserves Zhang’s vision. “Despite censorship, Zhang Yimou's tale of the power of cinema has a gorgeous eye, a droll sense of humor and a big, full celluloid heart.” –Jessica Kiang, Variety
