Always fascinated by the intricacies and surprises inherent in human evolution, legendary Spanish director Carlos Saura (Cria Cuervos, Flamenco, Blood Wedding) brings his endless sense of wonder to the intrinsic human desire to create art and the massive stone walls, be they in dank, darkened caves or on sunlit city blocks, that have always been humankind’s grandest canvasses. Along with his brother Pedro Saura, an expert on paleolithic art, the pair explore the very origins of human creativity, starting with the development of self-awareness and knowledge that life was finite which led to the stunning images of the natural world that cover cave walls from Altamira to Lascaux, among many others; to Taki 183, widely thought of as the first graffiti tagger, and the shift in emphasis from representational art to codified images created solely for others to see. Be they the rectangles, discs, and hand stencils that dot the Caves of Cantabria and Asturias; or the giant, ghostly human figures of Madrid’s own SUSO33, Saura reminds us that we make art for the same reasons our ancestors did, and are part of this grand and ancient tradition to simply and profoundly say, “I exist, I am here, and this is my world.”
El legendario director español, Carlos Saura (CRÍA CUERVOS, FLAMENCO, BODAS DE SANGRE), siempre fascinado por las sorpresas y complicaciones relacionadas con la evolución humana, aporta su interminable sentido de búsqueda al intrínseco deseo humano de crear arte, y los inmensos muros, ya sea en cuevas y oscuras grutas, o en luminosas cuadras citadinas, que han sido siempre los lienzos más representativos de la expresión de la humanidad. Junto con su hermano Pedro Saura, un experto en arte paleolítico, el dúo explora los orígenes de la creatividad humana, desde el desarrollo de la autoconsciencia y el reconocimiento del fin inminente de la vida, las cuales inspiraron las impresionantes imágenes del mundo natural plasmadas en las paredes de las cuevas de Altamira hasta Lascaux, entre otras; hasta Taki 183, al que se considera el primer artista de grafiti como tal y la evolución del arte como una expresión representacional, a la inclusión de imágenes codificadas creadas exclusivamente para el espectador. Ya sean los esténciles que salpican las cuevas de Cantabria y Asturias de rectángulos, discos y manos; o las gigantes y fantasmagóricas imágenes del SUSO33 de Madrid, Saura nos recuerda que creamos arte por la misma razón que lo hicieron nuestros ancestros, y que somos parte de la gran tradición ancestral que manifiesta con amplia profundidad: “existo, estoy aquí y este es mi mundo".
