Adapted from Bastien Vivès’s graphic novel, A Sister, Falcon Lake mixes chill summer vibes with an eerie gothic ambiance, and marks a strong, atmospheric feature debut for director-co-writer Charlotte LeBon, a Quebeçoise actress and artist. It follows two teenagers, the almost 14-year-old Bastien and 16-year-old Chloé, on summer holidays with their families at a Quebec lake cabin. Despite the age gap between them, the two teens form a singular bond, even though Chloé also enjoys terrorizing Bastien with tales of the child who mysteriously died in the very part of Falcon Lake where she insists Bastien go swimming. It is even rumored that the child’s ghost still haunts these waters. Ready to overcome his worst fears to earn a place in Chloé’s heart, Bastien experiences a pivotal moment. “Everything in this immensely promising, superbly crafted debut, is haunted, and every bright, happy beginning anticipates a darker, melancholy end.” —Jessica Kiang, Variety –Alissa Simon
