Dr. Greta
Feeney is an American opera singer and recitalist from Nantucket,
Massachusetts. A graduate of the Juilliard Opera Center, she was an Adler
Fellow and featured artist for over a decade at the San Francisco Opera, where
she sang a wide variety of roles in the lyric soprano repertoire, including
several world premieres. As a concert artist she has been featured by the
Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Luke's, among many
others. Her scholarly approach to singing lends itself to a specialization in medieval
and baroque sacred music, as well as classical interpretations of traditional
'roots music'. A dedicated educator and music director, she has served on the
faculties of Bergen College, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and
was Chair of Voice Studies at the Concord Conservatory of Music and Powers
Music School, where she founded Singing With Parkinson's, a concert choir
program focused on voice habilitation and memory care. On Nantucket, Greta
maintains an active solo performing career while serving as Director of Voice
Instruction at Nantucket Community Music Center and Director of Music
Ministries at St. Mary's Parish, also working part-time as a writer-researcher
on arts, culture and the environment. She holds degrees from The Mannes College
of Music (BM), Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music (MM), and SUNY Stony
Brook (DMA), where her dissertation "Verdi and the Cult of Mary"
explored how the great opera composer circumvented censorship of religious
references on the operatic stage during the Risorgimento.
