Description

New Restoration!

Put on your fuzzy slippers and grab your besties because this Halloween season We Really Like Her! is hosting a screening of Amy Holden Jones' feminist slashterpiece The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)!

Directed by Jones and written by author and civil rights activist Rita Mae Brown, The Slumber Party Massacre was originally designed to be a satire of slasher flicks, particularly in the way they fetishize women's bodies and are driven by phallic imagery. And while the finished product still takes an axe to our expectations, it is also just a really great horror comedy that presents women as they truly are: horny, hungry, and hellbent on sticking it to The Man. And yes, it does centre around a sleepover where teen girls are stalked by a guy with a drill.

After getting her start editing for Martin Scorsese and Hal Ashby, Jones dropped out of working on Steven Spielberg's E.T. to make her feature film directorial debut for Roger Corman's New World Pictures. To this day, The Slumber Party Massacre remains fresh and fun with its synthy soundtrack and silly sight gags coming together to keep you on edge for its entire runtime. It also inspired two outrageous sequels and a remake, all of which were written and directed by women.

An early leader in the women in horror movement, The Slumber Party Massacre deserves to be celebrated as much as its equally franchised peers. Like hello, those movies don't even have a girl eating cold pizza off a dead dude's back! (EMILY GAGNE & DANITA STEINBERG)

However, this new restoration looks great and we hope you can still join for THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE!
