50th Anniversary Screening! 4K Restoration!
As we wrap up another year, Neon Dreams slows things down with one of our favourite incidental holiday films. The Last Detail, directed by Hal Ashby (Harold & Maude, 8 Million Ways To Die), is a booze-soaked and hilariously profane hangout journey through the heart of America that is exploding with humanity and empathic joy.
Sailor Larry Meadows (Randy Quaid) is sentenced to eight years in a New Hampshire prison, and Navy bums Billy Buddusky (Jack Nicholson) and Mule Mulhall (Otis Young) are assigned to escort him there from Virginia. On the way they decide to show Meadows one last good time—a true "bon voyage", which includes drunken nights, a trip to a brothel, fistfights, and other debaucherous adventures.
The legendary script by Robert Towne (Chinatown) was shaped specifically for Nicholson's unhinged energy, resulting in what is arguably his ultimate performance. Featuring key appearances from Carol Kane, Nancy Allen, and Gilda Radner that are as funny as they are bittersweet. The Last Detail is a hallmark of the '70s New Hollywood movement and demands to be seen theatrically on a 4K restoration that we are screening on the 50th anniversary of the exact date the film takes place: December 15th, 1973.
