60th Anniversary Screening!
For Valentine’s Month, see the candy-coloured musical that’s a touchstone for both Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Celine Song’s Past Lives!
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’s charms are beautiful and bittersweet. Young lovers (Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo) separated by the Algerian war face life-altering decision in this musical romantic drama, written and directed by Jacques Demy with music by Michel Legrand. The characters and their costumes (by Jaqueline Moreau) are entirely) colour-coordinated to their elaborate surroundings (thanks to set designer Bernard Evein) yet the playful, candy-coloured artifice of golden era Hollywood musicals is grounded in realism and heartbreak. And it resists a conventional romantic ending.
Presented with an introduction to the movie’s colour and costume by series host Nathalie Atkinson.
