While it was nominated for Best Picture in its time, the Coen Brothers’ bloody brilliant crime comedy didn’t go home with the trophy, losing out to The English Patient. Over the years, however, the film has become a cult favourite, even inspiring an acclaimed TV series of the same name. What’s more, the lead character, Frances McDormand’s pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson, remains one of the Coens’ most indelible creations.
