By 1955, Alfred Hitchcock, the Master of Suspense, had been directing thrillers for over three decades.  When he was offered a television series, Hitchcock created broadcast gold.  Alfred Hitchcock Presents, created, hosted, and produced by Hitchcock, aired on CBS and NBC alternately between 1955 and 1965 (between 1962 and 1965, it was renamed the Alfred Hitchcock Hour).  While he was successful as a film director, he became an international celebrity with the television series.  A highlight of each episode were the opening and closing moments of the show, featuring Hitchcock.

New York State Librarian and Film Historian Philip Harwood will screen and discuss three episodes from the series’ first season (1955-1956).  Each episode features stars who appear in Hitchcock’s films:

Revenge (Directed by Hitchcock, 1955):  Carl Spann (Ralph Meeker) decides to get revenge when his wife (Vera Miles) is attacked by an unknown assailant. Still suffering from a breakdown, she pinpoints the man who she claims attacked her.

Breakdown (Directed by Hitchcock) Business executive William Callew (Joseph Cotton) is injured and paralyzed in a car crash and believed by everyone to be dead, fights to signal he is alive.

And So Died Riabouchinska (Directed by Robert Stevenson) Detective Krovitch (Charles Bronson) investigates a murder in a vaudeville house, which is linked to a strange ventriloquist named John Fabian (Claude Rains).
