The Man, the Myth, the Forbidden Legend: Candyman

Showings

Movie Madness Tue, Apr 2 6:30 PM

Description

A grad student named Helen visits a housing project expecting to document its graffiti for her thesis. Instead, she encounters a myth come to life – a man with a hook for a hand. Based on Clive Barker’s novella, The Forbidden, the film we now know as CANDYMAN (1992) drizzles with its written predecessor’s examination of myth and social class with Black experiences and even a little true crime. The result? A feast for probing minds and a key example of Black representation in horror.

We’ll discuss how director Bernard Rose’s 1992 film adaptation and actor Tony Todd’s ingenuity expand on Barker’s original work. Come ready to dip into your own theories and conspiracies about what the myth of Candyman is trying to tell us – the conversation will be sweet.

This class will be taught by Mareshah “MJ” Jackson, a visiting assistant instructor and lover of horror (and horror-adjacent) films!

Class size will be limited to 18.
