Description

THE BLACKENING follows a group of Black friends who gather at a remote cabin for a weekend getaway. However, their trip takes a terrifying turn when they find themselves being targeted and killed for sport.

As the friends try to survive the night, the film combines elements of horror and sharp social commentary, while confronting themes of racism, violence, and the discrimination that Black people face in America. THE BLACKENING takes a self-aware and provocative approach to the horror genre, flipping the script on conventional tropes and provocatively putting Black characters at the forefront.

In this class, we will discuss Black horror movie tropes, Black representation, cultural narratives, and the intersections of race, genre, and social commentary in cinema.

This course will be taught by Kristina Mucker, a  visiting assistant instructor and admirer of psychological and socially conscious horror.

Class size will be limited to 18.
