Gorgeous and emotionally charged, A
House Is Not a Disco goes behind the scenes of the infamous Fire
Island Pines, a gay fantasyland on the East Coast, to uncover real life
pleasures and simmering conflict. Combining breathtaking visions of natural
beauty with the day-to-day drama of vibrant characters, the film unfolds in a
natural, easygoing style that allows us to feel part of the experience. Just 50
miles from New York City, Fire Island has been an escape for gay men for well
over half a century. The film skillfully captures the energy and ideas of
today’s residents, as millennials connect with old timers to reframe the focus
and value of this community.
Actor-turned-director Brian J. Smith of Sense8 captures joy and tension of this group, as residents party, try on outfits, and make plans for a big annual party, while they ponder the real-world challenge of environmental impact of rising sea levels, and wonder out loud about the exclusivity of the culture they’ve created. Party energy and insightful observation fuel this fascinating trip to
a real-life paradise in transition. (2024, 91 mins)
