The CAC Screen Society presents a new all-night horror movie
marathon!
Featuring screenings of 5 horror classics: The Toxic
Avenger (1984), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), Society
(1989), Phantasm (1979) & a bonus mystery film that
will be a surprise on the night of the marathon!
THE TOXIC AVENGER (1984)
The Toxic Avenger stands with Pink Flamingos and The Evil Dead as one of the most gleefully offensive "midnight
movies" of the twentieth century. Now, this 1980s horror classic returns
to the big screen in a big way! Among the residents of Tromaville is Melvin, a
nerdy janitor at the local health club. A gang of thugs devise a cruel hoax
that goes horribly wrong and Melvin is cast through a third story window into a
vat of toxic waste. However, an unexpected metamorphosis takes place. As the
chemicals take hold of his body, Melvin turns into the Toxic Avenger, doer of
good, and brutal mauler of evil! The excitement is non-stop as Toxie sets out
to single handedly wipe out the forces of evil that torment the people of
Tromaville. (USA, 1984, 82 mins, R,
English | Dir. Lloyd Kaufman)
NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE (1979) (German Version)
Werner Herzog’s only horror film is as rich with artistry and tragedy as his
most grounded, human work. It is 1850 in the beautiful, perfectly-kept town of
Wismar. Jonathan Harker (Bruno Ganz,
Downfall; Wings Of Desire) is leaving
on a long journey over the Carpathian Mountains to finalize real estate
arrangements with a wealthy nobleman. His wife Lucy (Possession’s Isabelle Adjani)
begs him not to go and is troubled by a strong premonition of danger. Despite
her warnings, Jonathan arrives four weeks later at a large, gloomy castle. Out
of the mist appears a pale, wraith-like figure with deep-sunken eyes who
identifies himself as Count Dracula (Klaus
Kinski). The events that transpire slowly convince Harker that he is in the
presence of a vampire. Even still, he doesn’t realize the magnitude of danger
he, his wife and his town are about to experience. (West Germany, 1979, 107 mins, PG, German, English, Romany | Dir.
Werner Herzog)
SOCIETY (1989)
After producing Re-Animator, Brian
Yuzna turned his hand to directing with Society,
and gave birth to one of the ickiest, most original body horror shockers of all
time. Teenager Bill Whitney has always felt like the odd one out in his
wealthy, upper-class Beverly Hills family. But his sense of alienation takes a
sinister turn when he hears an audio recording of his sister’s coming-out
party, which seems to implicate his family and others in a bizarre, ritualistic
orgy. Packing stomach-churning grue courtesy Screaming Mad George (A Nightmare On Elm Street 4) and
thought-provoking social commentary in equal measure, Society is a biting
satire that culminates in the most gag-inducing “climax” in all of horror
history. (USA, 1989, 99 mins, R, English
| Dir. Brian Yuzna)
PHANTASM (1979)
Like The Shining and Dawn Of The Dead, Phantasm is a cerebral
nightmare that we never want to end. Written, produced, directed, shot, and
edited by Don Coscarelli when he was only 23-years-old, the movie follows a
group of small-town friends as they battle the "Tall Man"—a
mysterious force of cosmic horror who wields flying silver murderballs. This
Lovecraftian vortex deftly combines gothic horror, surrealism, and a killer prog
rock score into a concoction that horror fans have never stopped worshipping.
Thanks to a stunning restoration and 5.1 surround sound mix produced by J.J.
Abrams's Bad Robot and Coscarelli, Phantasm
has never looked or sounded better. (USA,
1979, 88 mins, R, English | Dir. Don Coscarelli)
+ a mystery film!
