We Really Like Her: MARY JANE'S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE + I WAS A TEENAGE SERIAL KILLER Double Feature!
This April, have a spring awakening with We Really Like Her!’s screening of the 2K restoration of Sarah Jacobson’s groundbreaking dramedy Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore (1996).
Written and directed by the “Queen of Underground Film” with financing from Tamra Davis (director of Billy Madison, Crossroads), this underseen, sex-positive dramedy has rightfully been described as a feminist twist on Kevin Smith’s Clerks. With a killer soundtrack including tracks from Babes in Toyland, Mudhoney and AFI, it has an irresistible counterculture spirit that continues to resonate decades later.
As down-to-earth as its title suggests, the film centres around the wonderfully weird employees of an independent cinema, including the titular teen played by Lisa Gerstein. In between shifts, Mary Jane makes movies with her friends and explores her burgeoning sexuality.
Before the feature, catch Jacobson’s short film I Was a Teenage Serial Killer, a favourite of fellow 90s film icon Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging) and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon. Please be advised that both films feature discussions of sexual violence. (EMILY GAGNE & DANITA STEINBERG)
