"The Coddling of the American Mind"
became a best-selling book in 2018 by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. Now it
is a film by filmmaker Ted Balaker. Through the eyes of students from different
universities, the film reveals how group-think, fear of cancellation, and race
and gender-based orthodoxies that dominate campus life contribute to
intellectual and emotional fragility, and undermine a university's core mission
of knowledge-seeking in a culture of free and open debate. It examines the
unintended consequences of overprotection and ideological polarization on
campuses and beyond, and explores how shifts in parenting, education, and
culture have contributed to a generation struggling with resilience, free
speech, and mental well-being. (USA, 2024, 93 min., color, DCP).
