Description

Alex?Ross?Perry’s genre-defying PAVEMENTS is a kaleidoscopic fever dream: part documentary, part biopic, part jukebox musical and part art-installation, all in homage to the ’90s alt-rock icons Pavement. Anchored by intimate footage of the band’s sold-out 2022 reunion tour, the film simultaneously constructs three parallel meta-narratives: Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical, a pop-up museum of real-and-imagined artifacts, and Range Life: A Pavement Story, a purposefully cheesy, prestige-seeking biopic featuring Joe?Keery as Stephen?Malkmus and Jason?Schwartzman as Matador Records’ Chris?Lombardi. Intercutting archival clips, surreal reenactments, and behind-the-scenes moments, Perry constructs a self-aware tapestry that mirrors both the band’s ironic detachment and enduring mystique.

Rather than a traditional rise-and-fall rock doc, PAVEMENTS deconstructs the myth of success itself, mocking the grandiosity of music biopics even as it celebrates Pavement’s legacy. It’s an affectionate yet subversive ode to creative imperfection, capturing the ethos of DIY spirit, nostalgic resonance, and the slippery border between fact and fantasy.
