Final Grrrls: The 1990s Teen Horror Film

When Scream was unleashed on unsuspecting audiences it became a surprise blockbuster resurrecting the teen horror film. The movies that followed in its wake ushered in a new era of horror that not only commented on popular culture but became part of it, a style which had its fans and critics. Through their meta-dialogue with the genre, these films openly questioned the gender politics of the films that came before them through the lens of third wave feminism.
In this lecture we'll revisit some of the iconic films of this period such as The Craft (1996), Scream (1996), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), The Faculty (1998), The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999), and Scary Movie (2000) to better understand how they reimagined teen terror for a new generation.
