Middle-aged and erratic, Oscar is a failed writer who has given up on life. Unemployed and living with family, he wanders the streets of Medellín in a drunken stupor, lamenting the state of literature in his home country, where he has succumbed to the cliché of the tortured artist. However, the opportunity to mentor a young student offers a chance at redemption, if he doesn’t screw it up first.
Simón Mesa Soto has firmly established himself as one of Colombia’s most captivating cinematic voices. His short films, Mother (2016) and Leidi (2014), and his debut film, Amparo (2022), all competed at the Cannes Film Festival. Notably, Leidi emerged victorious, winning the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film in 2014. With his latest film, A Poet, first-time actor Ubeimar Rios delivers a performance marked by darkly comic pathos. This Un Certain Regard Jury Prize-winner explores the raw and riotous farce of how good deeds are often met with the universe’s peculiar and poetic form of cruel punishment.
