Description

20th Anniversary Screening! Presented on 35mm!

This Galentine’s Day, We Really Like Her! invites you and your bestie to a 20th anniversary screening of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, presented on stunning 35mm.

Based on Antonia Fraser’s 2001 biography Marie Antoinette: The Journey, Coppola’s third feature film is a sympathetic and stylish retelling of the former queen of France’s lavish, yet lonely life. Controversial for mixing historical locations (including the actual Palace of Versailles!) with anachronistic costumes and music, it is perhaps the boldest entry in Coppola’s filmography, while also retaining her signature wistfully feminine style.

Starring the one and only Kirsten Dunst, Marie Antoinette does not shy away from the fact that its subject was a mere fourteen years old when she was betrothed to Louis XVI (played here by Jason Schwartzman). In between scenes of wild parties and shopping sprees, we watch Dunst’s Marie struggle to fit in, both with the French public and within her home.

As memorable as the woman who inspired it, Marie Antoinette is a certified modern epic that absolutely deserves its cult status. It is the type of film best seen on the big screen, especially with an audience who understands the isolation that comes from being a woman, especially a young one, in power.

This screening is generously sponsored by Hollywood Suite, with prizes provided by Letterboxd.
