Description

Mandolin master Mike Marshall joins forces with Brazilian guitar virtuoso Alessandro Penezzi for a spirited evening of choro, samba, and improvisation. Marshall, a former member of the David Grisman Quintet, brings decades of genre-blending creativity to the stage. Penezzi, one of Brazil’s most soulful and technically dazzling guitarists, is a celebrated figure in Brazilian popular music. Their collaboration promises a vibrant exchange between two musical worlds bursting with rhythm, energy, and a sense of celebration.

Three-time Grammy nominee Mike Marshall is one of the world’s most accomplished and versatile mandolinists, equally at home on mandolin, mandocello, guitar, and violin. After joining the groundbreaking David Grisman Quintet at age 19, he went on to shape the future of American acoustic music through ensembles such as The Montreux Band, Psychograss, New Grange, and The Modern Mandolin Quartet. Marshall has toured internationally, recorded over 40 albums, and collaborated with icons including Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, and Chris Thile. A champion of Brazilian choro, he has released influential recordings and founded Adventure Music, a label dedicated to Brazilian and New Acoustic styles. Alongside his wife, German mandolinist Caterina Lichtenberg, Marshall has produced multiple duo albums and leads mandolin workshops worldwide. A dedicated educator, he has taught hundreds of students through ArtistWorks and founded major programs including the Savannah Music Festival’s Acoustic Music Seminar. He is currently completing his recording of the Bach Cello Suites on mandocello.

Brazilian guitarist and composer Alessandro Penezzi is recognized as one of today’s leading voices in choro—Brazil’s most sophisticated instrumental tradition. A virtuoso of the 7-string guitar, as well as mandolin, cavaquinho, tenor guitar, and flute, he is celebrated for his brilliant improvisation, technical mastery, and contemporary reimagining of Brazilian musical forms. Penezzi’s acclaimed album Quebranto with Yamandu Costa won two Prêmio da Música Brasileira awards, cementing his reputation as one of Brazil's top instrumentalists. His international career spans more than 15 countries with appearances at major festivals including Skopje Jazz Festival, Omni Guitar Festival, and the Savannah Music Festival. He has performed with leading Brazilian artists such as Hamilton de Holanda, Hermeto Pascoal, Dominguinhos, and the Jazz Sinfônica, and he composes for film and television, including the Emmy-nominated animation SOS Fada Manu. In 2024, Penezzi began a dynamic new collaboration with mandolinist Mike Marshall, recording their debut duo album for Adventure Music and launching international touring plans. Also a respected educator, Penezzi teaches workshops and masterclasses across Brazil and abroad.
