WHERE JAZZ BECAME LEGEND: REMEMBERING SONNY’S PLACE
A special afternoon of live music, storytelling, and jazz history
Sunday, April 12th from
3 PM - 4:30 PM
$35 Public | $30 Members
Step back into the golden era of Long Island jazz and celebrate the legendary Sonny’s Place, the intimate 68-seat club on Merrick Road in Seaford
that became a home for some of the greatest names in jazz.
Owned and operated by Sonny Meyerowitz, Sonny’s Place was a
musical landmark from the 1970s through the 1990s. The small room welcomed jazz
giants like Count Basie, Billy Eckstine, and Sarah Vaughan, while also
nurturing the vibrant community of local musicians who helped shape Long
Island’s jazz scene.
Decades later, its legacy still resonates. Mention Sonny’s
Place to jazz musicians and fans, and the stories immediately begin, memories
of unforgettable performances, late-night jam sessions, and a room where the
music truly came alive.
Jazz at the Barn,
inspired by the spirit of Sonny’s Place, continues that tradition of honoring
jazz and the artists who keep it thriving. In partnership with the Cinema Arts
Centre, this special event brings the history of Sonny’s Place back to life
with the very musicians who were part of it.
