Selected by Mitchell Kaplan In his second collaboration with Fellini, Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido, a filmmaker suffering from "director's block". Amid artistic and marital difficulties, he has lost interest in his new sci-fi film that includes veiled autobiographical references. He struggles to work half-heartedly with flashbacks and dreams intruding into his reality. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and a constant presence on prestigious compilations of the greatest films of all time, a sampling of accolades suffice to guarantee its pedigree. "It's Fellini's last black-and-white picture," wrote Jonathan Rosenbaum, "and conceivably the most gorgeous and inventive thing he ever did." Echoed Stanley Kauffmann: "In terms of execution I cannot remember a more brilliant film."

A Woman Under the Influence

Selected by Mitchell Kaplan Charting Rowlands’s transformation as “Mabel” from endearingly kooky to bleakly incoherent (and back again), John Cassavetes's A Woman Under the Influence is perhaps the most important examination of mental health ever captured onscreen. Cassavetes observes the ricochets between Mabel’s health and her in-laws' “influence." But at the heart of this film is her relationship with her conservative husband (an equally amazing Peter Falk), who struggles in vain to pull Mabel out of her decline. Both tough-as-bricks and delicate, A Woman Under the Influence goes straight for the throat.

Rhapsody in Blue

FREE FOR MEMBERS The film traces Gershwin's rise from a "song plugger" for a Manhattan music publishing company to the heights of international fame and fortune. Gershwin's first big hit is "Swanee," introduced on Broadway by Al Jolson (playing himself). In collaboration with his lyricist brother, Ira (Herbert Rudley), George pens hit after hit in show after show. But George's kindly old music teacher wants his prize pupil to aspire to something more artistic. Gershwin responds with "Rhapsody in Blue," which debuts at Aeolian Hall in 1924 under the baton of bandleader Paul Whiteman (also playing himself). As his fame and workload grows, George finds he has no time at all for romance; the two ladies in his life both eventually realize that they'll always have to play second fiddle to Gershwin's muse. Eventually, after composing numerous masterpieces, George pushes himself too far. The film was nominated for Academy Awards® for Best Score and Best Sound.
